In comparison to the relatively spacious quarters that the fort's officers received, the living conditions of the enlisted men were far more demanding. The main barracks building located within the fort's walls was home at one time to five hundred soldiers, which resulted in tight quarters. Double bunks were the order of the day, with men packed into every room of the four-story building. Here reenactors' gear is visible in one of the restored bunk rooms inside the barracks during an overnight stay at one of the many events held at the fort each year.
