Located on the fort grounds outside the star fort itself, the garrison's guardhouse provided living quarters for the garrison police as well as small holding cells for those who found themselves on the wrong side of a regulation. A small exercise yard in the rear of the building provided prisoners with a chance to escape their cramped conditions for a short while each day. Recently renovated to its late nineteenth / early twentieth century condition, visitors today can experience what life was like as a member of the fort's garrison a hundred years ago in authentic period conditions.
