Located inside the fortress near the main barracks building, the main powder magazine held the fort's supply of gunpowder for use with the cannon and muskets of the soldiers. Heavily constructed of stone and surrounded by an earthen embankment, the magazine was designed to direct the force of an explosion within it up and through the comparatively soft ceiling in an attempt to minimize the damage to the fort grounds in a worst-case scenario.
