To help the fort's soldiers defend the outpost against any enemy attack, the walls of the fort and the main barracks were equipped with multiple firing ports for muskets, such as the one seen here. The port was very narrow on the wall face, presenting a difficult target for an attacker to hit. The port widened on the inside of the wall, allowing a soldier to have a wide field of fire while still being protected by solid stone walls. This particular port is located in the main barracks building and provided fire onto the fort's grounds in case an enemy managed to penetrate the defenses of the main walls.
